It’s all about motoring like in the old days, a scene which is recreated in the Ennstal Classic.

This Saturday, 17 July 2010, the 18th Ennstal Classic came to an end after four magnificent days of motoring through the Alpine region.

The Ennstal Classic allows their drivers to learn about the limits of yesterday’s cars on today’s streets.

Especially for the occasion, Sebastian Vettel was flown in per helicopter to race a 1962 Porsche F1 in the “Chopard Grand Prix” of Gröbming (A), a five lap demonstration race of historic racing cars. David Coulthard brought the Red Bull sponsored NASCAR Toyota Camry and Gerhard Berger, who has fond memories of the F1 turbo era, raced a  4.5 Liter twelve cylinder Porsche 917, in turbo trim happily delivering 1,000+ BHP. A late, but appreciated entry came from BMW, bringing their Le Mans 24H winning 6 Litres V12 sports prototype from 1999, which was driven by Dieter Quester.

Of course no electronic devices in the Chopard Grand Prix, but analogue Chopard watches instead. Other big names that participated in the Ennstal Classic were Stirling Moss (GB) on Porsche 911 S, Jochen Mass (D) on Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, Derek Bell (GB) on Porsche 356 B GT Carrera, Marc Surer (CH) on BMW 328 MM Coupe, Mario Illien (CH) on DKW F 91, Mario Theissen (D)  and Christian Klien (A) on BMW 328 MM Roadster, Dr. Wolfgang Porsche (D) on Porsche 356 Carrera, Rauno Aaltonen (SF) on Austin Mini Cooper Rallye and Jo Ramirez (Mex) on Porsche 911 T.

Over 50 different car brands, built before 31 December 1972, are represented every year. All special cars with a very special history, representing milestones of technique at their times.

Adventure everywhere, when the countryside quiets down and the headlights are switched on. While the Chopard stop watches are recording every hundredths of a second, the co-drivers stare at their road book and the drivers monitor their oil-pressure gauges. It’s all about motoring like in the old days, a scene which is recreated in the Ennstal Classic.
