Silverstone Classic
The Silverstone Classic celebrated over 60 years of the Formula One World Championship at the Home of British Motor Racing with cars depicting the F1 grids of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, all racing on the historic GP circuit.
Featuring 22 races, 800+ competitors, and 600 of the most valuable race cars in the world, the Silverstone Classic was bigger and better than ever before.
A crowd of 40,000+ were whished back to the 1920 – 1990s era covering saloons, sports, touring and open wheel. Silverstone’s Historic Grand Prix circuit echoed to the sound of international classic racing at its very best.
Additionally some 120 Classic Car Clubs put on a display of their members’ cars on the infield which meant in excess of 5,000 privately owned cars from the world’s most iconic marques.
Open pit garages, a variety of family-led entertainment including Funfair and Air Displays, exhibitions, trade stalls plus live music and barbecues in the famous Scarf & Goggles entertainment area, made it a unique experience for race fans and car enthusiasts alike. Adding to the fun, more than 30 hot air balloons were set to fire up for their traditional morning and evening fly-outs.
In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the legendary Porsche 956, Bonhams auctioneers – main sponsor of the event – was in attendance with a new-look auction of cars and automobilia totally themed around the Porsche marquee. The Porsche 956 being one of the world’s most successful sports cars of all time, was first launched and raced at the Silverstone six hour race of 1982.
Starting early on the Saturday, at a choice of four locations, the Silverstone Classic Retro Run was a dream come true for owners of any pre-1987 classic car. To top it off, each participant drove two laps of the legendary circuit in their own car, received two full three-day event passes with in-field parking at the Silverstone Circuit and also a complimentary four-month subscription to the Classic and Sportscar magazine.
