Brands Hatch Masters Festival 2014

Brands Hatch Masters Festival 2014

The Brands Hatch Masters Festival 2014, on May 24-25, will put the car, that took Ayrton Senna to his first ever Grand Prix win, on display.

The Brazilian won a rain-soaked Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril in 1985 in his JPS-liveried Lotus 97T/2, having started from pole position for the first time in his career. The turbo-charged Renault V6 Lotus designed by Gerard Ducarouge piloted a primitive form of barge boards and winglets on the rear of the car to aid air flow. On his way to victory, Senna lapped everyone except for second place finisher Michele Alboreto’s Ferrari. The 1985 season, was also the season that Senna had begun to establish himself as the quickest in the field: his tally of seven poles was far more than that of any of the other drivers.

He won again at Spa that season while team-mate Elio De Angelis guided his 97T to victory at Imola for the final win of his career. Senna and De Angelis would finish 4th and 5th in the 1985 Driver Championship standings.

The car is run by Classic Team Lotus and will be part of their F1 display area. Ayrton Senna’s Lotus will surely be the star at the annual Brands Hatch Masters Festival.

Rachel Bailey, Brands hatch Masters Festival 2014 Racing Event Manager said: “This is a fabulous coup for the event. The Senna legend is as strong as ever and while people remember him mostly for his successes in McLarens, his amazing drive in the rain at Estoril in 1985 should never be under-estimated. His efforts underlined his ability in wet weather and laid the foundations for a stunning career. We are delighted that Classic Team Lotus has been able to loan us the car for the weekend and are sure it will be a big attraction.”
