Grande Premio Historico do Porto
The Grande Premio Historico do Porto will be organized 10-12 July 2009, using the ancient harbour circuit of Porto.
Circuito da Boavista has witnessed car racing already since 1931. However, 1950 marked a turning point at the Boavista Circuit, which was redesigned into a modern 7.775 km GP track.
In 1951, the Automobile Club of Portugal was successful in putting the country on the international motor racing calendar, by organising the 1st Portugal Grand Prix for Sports Cars. The new and international allure of the circuit introduced great talent to the Porto Boavista circuit, involving the world’s best drivers, such as Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn and José Froilán González.
With the arrival of Formula 1 in 1958, this marked one of the highlights in the history of the Circuito da Boavista. This was also the year in which Mike Hawthorn and Stirling Moss were battling for the F1 World Championship. Porto Boavista witnessed a thrilling race, with Moss beating his rival at that point. Hawthorn however, would eventually win the 1958 title.
It’s like no other event you’ll ever witness. The racing is spectacular, mainly due to the characteristics of the old circuit. There’s no doubt that the modern Boavista circuit is difficult, narrow and very unforgiving on both cars and drivers.
One can expect a wonderful entry of pre-war sports cars, pre-1961 and pre-1966 F1 races and historic Formula Juniors. The weekend will see the racing going on into the evening, the circuit being bathed in a golden glow of sunset.> Grande Premio Historico do Porto (official website)
